Widen Your Horizons: Hobby & Craft Books 2020

Gambar
During what NPD BookScan considers the Covid-19 period of sales reporting, March 1–May 2, the hobbies and crafts category saw increased interest, with print unit sales up almost 16% compared with the same period in 2019. To encourage that growth, marketing departments have had to find new ways to promote titles and retool plans for books that were in the works well before the pandemic hit. DK managing editor Ruth O'Rourke says the company's new Stay at Home Hub of online activities for adults and children draws from an array of titles, offering, for instance, step-by-step instructions from April's Woodworking for making a bird box and a how-to for machine-sewn seams from 2018's The Sewing Book. Since launching the hub in late March, DK has seen a 161% increase in global website traffic. Storey Publishing has been sharing downloadable activities and excerpts from forthcoming titles across social media platforms, says associate publicity and marketing campaign mana...

Homemaker Turns Entrepreneur With Miniature Clay Art Wins Global Fans

Gambar
Promotion I have this habit of looking at food pictures when a sudden wave of cravings hits me. This often happens late at night when I can do nothing to get over the self-induced hunger pangs. As I scroll through Instagram, I come across a picture of perfectly cooked paper-thin masala dosas, with a side of coconut chutney and sambar, with onions garnished on the top. Upon further inspection (and after having worn my glasses), I see that the food has been moulded from clay in miniature form! The paint and the textures of each of the components on the miniature plate are so realistic. These food miniatures are created by Chennai-based mother-daughter duo Sudha and Neha Chandranarayan. They have created over 100+ designs. Two years ago, when Neha was celebrating her eighteenth birthday, her mum decided to give her a dosa miniature made from clay. Neha was excited and showed off the beautiful artwork to her friends. Since then, Neha's friends...

Arts during Covid: still sizzling

Gambar
Music festivals may have gone disappeared this summer, but when it comes to creative expression, the vibe in the box canyon is as big and bold as ever. This week, no fewer than four separate artistic events not merely 'kick off,' they are returning for the summer season.  The get-togethers may look a little different this year, in order to comply with local and state health guidelines. (Main Street is reliably relaxed, gorgeous and sunny this time of year, but we are in a pandemic, and the first priority is to ensure the safety of residents, visitors and the artists themselves).  The poster for the Ah Haa School's annual auction pretty much sums up the changes: the auction is online this year. But the good news is that is not only still taking place, but for a longer time than usual: the sale launches with an online artwork and silent auction Friday, July 3, and culminates two weeks later, on July 17, in a live auction at 7:30 p.m. (vis...

Henshaws answers questions on closure of arts and crafts centre in Knaresborough

Gambar
Though Henshaws Special College on Bogs Lane in Harrogate is not believed to be under threat, such are the scale of the financial problems facing Henshaws as a whole, this week saw a second announcement - the charity was to 'transition out' of providing supported living housing for people with disabilities and special needs in Harrogate. Henshaws headquarters in Manchester is keen to stress that its Knaresborough-based arts and crafts centre is not closing permanently. But feelings are running high among art makers and their worried parents and families and confusion remains over what happens next and what Henshaws plans are going forward. It's partly to address those worries that Henshaws headquarters issued its own Q&A earlier this week in an attempt to address growing speculation and rumours about what is going to happen next. In its Q&A, Henshaws says: "Closing the Arts & Crafts Centre wasn't a decision we wanted to make and it is not permanent....

Sawdust Art & Craft Festival to go on in Laguna Beach as weekend outdoor marketplace

Gambar
The show will go on in Laguna Beach for the Sawdust Art & Craft Festival, though it will take on a different look this summer as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. Organizers announced last week that the festival will morph into a weekend outdoor marketplace as opposed to the event's typical summer festival, which took place last year between late June to September, due to state and county health regulations. This year's event will feature more than 100 artists in rotation throughout the summer. Unlike last year's almost 200 uniquely designed booths, the outdoor weekend marketplace will have 46 spaces available to artists on rotation. "Our first priority is the health and well-being of our artists, staff and patrons," Monica Prado, president of the festival's board of directors, said in a statement. Kids bored at home? This children's art festival has gone national

Gambar
© DCC TOMORROW, A RANGE of free arts events and workshops for children and teenagers is kicking off – to propel students into arts, crafts and music by asking them to give creativity a go. Cruinniú na nÓg – which is usually a Dublin-focused initiative – is hosting its events online this year, meaning that children from across Ireland can join in. To add to that, organisers have decided to leave all but one of its 27 events, tutorials, videos and guides online for the entire summer – a resource much-needed by parents. Margarita Cappock, an Assistant Arts Officer at Dublin City Council, told TheJournal.ie that artists usually submit ideas for what activities they can do for children and teens – this year they had to tweak these pitches in order to move them all online. "The amount of goodwill and can-do from all the artists and organisations has been absolutely brilliant," she said. "Some of them have turned out just really so well." It means c...
