Arts crafts essays: Hockey India to celebrate Olympic Day online

Paintbrushes will replace hockey sticks, craft will be limited to paper only. In these unprecedented times that the world is going through, the annual Olympic Day on June 23 is destined to be celebrated from the confines of homes – thanks to the pandemic.

Every year, Hockey India commemorated Olympic Day through tournaments held by member units across India. This year, Hockey India wants to promote it in innovative ways.

"This year, since we all are facing unprecedented times in the world, it is all the more important to use the power of sports to ensure we move ahead in the direction of positivity and strength. Hockey India would like to request its member Units to celebrate the Olympic Day 2020 by conducting various activities from the comfort of your homes and utilizing the digital platforms as much as possible," the Hockey India CEO wrote to the member units.

Member units have been told to hold quizzes and trivia events related to the Olympics, hockey in particular, on social media platforms and WhatsApp groups. Besides this, they have also been told to conduct mental and emotional well-being video sessions along with showcasing hockey skills and ways to stay fit at home.

Youngsters are to share essays and write-ups on the Olympics, Olympians and any Olympic story they can recall in 100 to 150 words. Top entries are to be shared with Hockey India. It will be providing hockey sticks to the top three participating member units who will conduct these activities.

Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) is going serious with this innovative initiative. MSSA hockey secretary Lawrence Bing said, "Keeping Hockey India guidelines in mind, MSSA has decided to organize competition and events for the kids. This event will not only be limited to hockey players alone, but children from other sports can become a part of this event."

According to Bing, MSSA has divided the competition/event into three parts:

1. Olympics Day Art and Crafts 2. Olympics Day Program videos of wellness, hockey skill (20sec) 3. Write-ups (essay writing) on importance of Olympic Day and Virtues

MSSA will hold the celebrations from June 20 to 23. The top three schools in the three categories will be rewarded for best entries.
