SkyART bringing art kits directly to Chicago youth during stay-at-home

Gambar
When Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced his COVID-19 stay-at-home order on March 20, SkyART didn't miss a beat. Realizing it could no longer offer classes and other programs at its South Side location, the non-profit art center immediately began helping its participants in other ways. That very day, staffers scrounged together art materials from its studios and put together kits for use at home. They spread the word to some of the center's regulars to stop by and pick up the supplies, and the offerings were depleted in minutes. "We didn't anticipate what the response would be," said Devon VanHouten-Maldonado, assistant director of programs. "People came and lined up at the door and we ran out. And for us, it was like, 'Wow, we need to keep doing this.'" And that's exactly what SkyART has done. In addition to taking some of its classes, art therapy and other programs online, a priority has been distributing more than 1,000 art kits to fami...

Gambar
More than 170 artists and craftspeople from throughout the country showcase their wares at the annual Arts & Crafts Festival. However, for 2020, the event will be moving to the online realm due to social distancing guidelines during the coronavirus pandemic. AmeriCU Syracuse Arts & Crafts Festival, in partnership with the Downtown Committee, will be highlighting the works of artists from the July event through social media. Organizers said the decision to make it a virtual event wasn't only taking into consideration the 50,000 visitors to Columbus Circle, but also those who travel for the event. Artists travel into Syracuse from as many as 25 U.S. states and Canada. This year was also supposed to be the celebration of the event's 50th year. They hope to have their 50th Anniversary Celebration at the live event in July 2021. More details about the event are yet to be announced on the Downtown Committee website. Somerset Co. Library Offers Virtual Learning Youth Art Services

Gambar
Press release from the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey: (Somerset County, NJ: May 21, 2020) Art can keep your children, tweens, and teens entertained, but, more importantly, art can reduce stress and benefit an adolescent's emotional development and growth. The Somerset County Library System of New Jersey (SCLSNJ) has a robust suite of services to help youths be creative, inspired, and curious while still remaining encouraged in their education pursuits. "While staying safe at home, incorporating the arts into your child's routine is important at all stages of development," said Lynn Mazur, youth services supervisor. "For younger children, doing crafts can help develop the hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills necessary in all aspects of life, beginning with handwriting. For older children, encouraging the exploration of their expressive side through the arts will expand their creative thinking skills, allowing them to think outside the box to ...

Dublin moves forward with new cultural arts center despite $4 million shortfall

Gambar
DUBLIN — A new cultural arts center that will take over the former police headquarters is moving forward, despite a $4 million funding shortfall. The former police headquarters at City Hall will be remodeled so that the first floor will be a 13,000-square-foot multiuse cultural arts center. Cost of the center, originally estimated at $5.8 million, has shot up to an estimated $11.9 million, largely due in part to the amenities added since the project was first proposed. The city has $7.9 million of dedicated funding for the center, which makes it about $4 million short. Despite this, Dublin City Council unanimously agreed on Tuesday to move forward with the schematic design and building layout of the new center, with an expectation that it could be put out to bid as early as February 2021. Construction could begin then in the spring, and could take up to a year to complete, according to the city. Assistant City Manager Colleen Tribby told the council that there were other city f...

Front Range art galleries opening with safety at forefront

Gambar
At SmithKlein Gallery in downtown Boulder, the second-generation owners of the storied art space boarded up its windows after a neighboring business was burglarized in March. With the type of high-end fine art the gallery has in its inventory, co-owner Ann Klein said they really had no other choice. Out of wood panels, they enlisted Colorado muralist Patrick Maxcy to create a masterpiece. Among whimsical birds perched on a tree branch and butterflies and leaves floating against a vibrant pale blue sky, the words "Life," "Beauty" and "Hope" brighten up an abandoned Pearl Street pro-tem. "That's been uplifting and positive," said Klein. They'll keep the boards up until June 1. "We're one of the oldest and longest family-run businesses in Boulder," Klein said. SmithKlein opened on Pearl Street in 1984. "We really do need local support, especially in the next couple of months. Locally owned businesses need the commu...

Pandemic nixes Mountain State Art & Craft Fair

Gambar
RIPLEY — The 2020 Mountain State Art & Craft Fair in July has been canceled because of the pandemic, organizers said on Wednesday. The 58th edition of the arts and crafts show, considered the granddaddy of shows in West Virginia, is held over the July 4 holidays. The show will be held July 1-4, 2021 at Cedar Lakes Conference Center near Ripley. Postponement of this year's fair was deemed necessary due to concerns about the coronavirus involving large gatherings, according to board President Jean Smith. The decision was made with the safety of participants and guests in mind, Smith said. "Our Board sincerely believes postponing until 2021 is the right decision for the safety of everyone involved," Smith said. "We've already started discussions about the 2021 Fair." More than 20 volunteers serving on the Fair's Board of Directors came to that conclusion after reaching out to more than 50 participating artisans and exhibitors, Smith said. ...

'Practical Wearable Art' for the New Normal of COVID-19

Gambar
PORT BRUCE, ON, May 19, 2020 /CNW/ - We have all heard the expression: "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade."  Welcome to the age of lemons, which for some, like Mark Kuper and his wife Shelagh Ashford, has inspired them to produce 'Practical Wearable Art' for the normal of COVID-19. The Ashford Twist, a company which produces colourful face masks and head scarves, was created by Mark and Shelagh to help combat this pandemic challenge in our lives. "Face masks have suddenly become part of our daily routine," said Mark. "We all need to be safe and healthy, and also act responsibly to protect our communities." The couple, who produce craft shows throughout the province, were left stranded when the annual Canada Blooms National Home Show in Toronto was abruptly cancelled in mid-March. After they returned to self-isolation in their home-cottage in Port Bruce, it took Shelagh just a few days to realize they could draw from their years of arts ...

Partial Reopening for Art Toy and Book Shops

Gambar
The District government begins its Educational and Academic Retail Shops (EARS) pilot program today, May 18. It is evidence of a small but cautious approach to reopening Washington, D.C., for full business activity. From the Office of the Mayor: "The EARS pilot will grant waivers to local educational and academic retail shops to do curbside and front door pickup. All sales are advance purchases (pre-ordered online or by phone) only. The stores will need to agree to share data and information with us about their operations. The goal with this pilot is to learn important lessons about reopening while ensuring safe operations." In accordance with the mayor's order, the District government will only allow certain nonessential businesses to operate if operators submit and get approved a COVID-19 EARS waiver request to operate during the COVID-19 public health emergency. According to the District government, the following businesses were approved f...

Laguna Beach art festivals still hope to open even as one cancels its plans for summer

Gambar
The Festival of Arts announced Monday that it's canceling this summer's fine arts show in addition to the Pageant of the Masters — the second time it's closed since the Festival of Arts was founded in 1932. The first time it was closed, it was a casualty of World War II. This year, it falls as another victim to the COVID-19 pandemic that has upended the country. The Sawdust Art & Craft Festival and Art-A-Fair organizers are hoping they won't have to join the Festival of Arts in a throng of cancelled summer events such as the Hollywood Bowl season and Orange County Fair or local events and amenities such as the summer trolley services and the 4th of July fireworks show. Neither festival has officially made a decision on whether or not they will happen this summer, though both are slated to open on July 18 and 17, respectively. Both have submitted plans to the city for review and decide if they can operate. Those plans include reductions to crowd capacities, operati...

Detached Ditmas Park Arts and Crafts House With Built-Ins Garage Asks $2.4 Million

Gambar
This early 20th century Ditmas Park detached house conveniently has a home office right off the foyer, a spacious interior and plenty of curb appeal. The house, located at 1304 Ditmas Avenue, was pitched as "absolutely the best value" in an 1916 sales ad at the time, boasting parquet floors, a 32-foot-long living room, two baths and a lot large enough to add a garage. Not all of those details survived over the years, but a garage did indeed get built. A 2017 renovation retained that long living room but eliminated some walls to open up the dining room, kitchen and sunroom — and finished everything off with pale floors and white walls. The original open porch, seen in the 1916 ad, had already been filled in, and there's a large foyer with a closet and a windowed home office with built-in shelves.
